Hello
I am back again to post some very positive results. Out of the several hypermiling techniques, i followed only the safest ones which are turning off the engine at stop lights, drafting to a stop if i see a red light ahead etc and guess what the average mileage increased to 28.18 and this is City driving!!! woohooo...

Hypermiling - Have anyone heard of it!

Well with the soaring gas prices, this technique which was in the sidelines is now picking up lot of attention and all the sites that provide information about hypermiling are overloaded with visitors.

Ok - what is hypermiling? - it is a method of increasing your car's gas mileage by making skillful changes in the way you drive, allowing you to save gas and thereby have an easier time withstanding the rising oil and gas prices. Some claim to exceed the EPA estimates.

Most of the articles centered around using a hybrid car (Toyota Prius or Honda Insight or Ford Escape) but there were some articles that talked about trying this technique in regular cars and ofcourse there were lot of CAUTION signs and warnings.

So what the heck, with gas prices going up like nuts, i thought i will try it out with my car and indeed it had some effect on the mileage. Given the end result, let me first help you understand what hypermiling is all about. You need to read through couple of articles:

1. From the cleanmpg.org website - a very concise article that explains all about hypermiling - click here

Other sites and links where they have some good information (including some youtube videos)

hypermiling.com
A google video

And ofcourse if you google hypermiling you will hit one million different websites.

Ok coming back to the test results with my Acura 2002 3.2TL. These are the techniques i followed from the hypermiling websites.

1. Drafting to a stop (by shutting off the engine) when i see a red light ahead.
2. Drafting in highways when the speed is beyond 55mph.

My car usually give 310 - 315 miles/14.8 gallons. but for the same amount of gas this time it gave me 347miles .. not a great improvement but it is good.

So why not try it and post in this forum your test results.
